Stakes could be high for online poker fans
Federal law is unclear about the legality of online poker because relevant legislation — the Interstate Wire Act — was written in 1961, long before the Internet emerged. While the act prohibits betting on contests via a "wire," or phone, it doesn't address online games.
The U.S. Justice Department says that doesn't matter and prohibits all forms of online gambling. But some courts have ruled otherwise.
And while many states have anti-gambling laws, the rules are rarely enforced against individual players, said I. Nelson Rose, a professor at Whittier Law School.
